Follow and Implement a 7-Step Plan to Regain Healthy Digestion 

Step 1

Setting the Table 

In module one, we are setting the table for the whole Rest, Digest, and Heal course, but also for our meals, diving into how to prepare ourselves and our space for optimal digestion. Often, how we eat can impact our gut health as much as what we eat. We will discuss the why and how of getting into “rest and digest” mode before meals and how to plan our eating to support digestion. Come to the table with an open mind–the topics discussed in this course may be counter to many of your ideas about food and eating!

Step 2

Foods to Support the Healing Journey 

So much of the focus of most gut-healing programs is on what to avoid in the diet, but we are trying a new path: focusing on what is missing and what foods need to be included to heal the gut. We will learn about ancestral foods that nourish the gut and ways to prepare foods to support digestion. This module also discusses the common mistakes many make when trying to heal the gut, such as under-eating or drinking too much water. Let’s take out the fear of food and replace it with freedom!

Step 3

Movement for Your Movements 

Our modern lifestyles are chronically deprived of movement, and this impacts every area of our health, including the gut! This module will discuss exercises, posture, body work and even furniture (hello, Squatty Potty!) that supports proper digestion and elimination, as well as the impact of movement on the gut microbiome.

Step 4

Making Connections

A healing journey is not meant to be taken alone. Along with Laura as your guide and the RDH online community, there are important connections in your life that will be helpful in getting your gut to where you want it to be. These connections are often missing in our modern world, and it is our job to get them back: connections to ourselves, community, nature, farmers and producers, spirit and purpose. This module will help give ideas for how to develop and strengthen these relationships, who to bring to the table to help on your journey, and the role these have in healing the gut–including helping to keep you in rest and digest (and heal!) mode as much as possible.

Step 5

Toxic Load: It's Coming From Inside the House

Reducing stress on the body is the key to healing the gut–so why sabotage yourself by adding stressors to your body and environment? This module will discuss the principle of “toxic load,” and how to clean up your home, personal care products, clothing, and even electronic use to decrease stress on the body and get you closer to healing your gut. We will also discuss the impact of these various items on the microbiome. Stressing about stressors is not necessary, and is of course counterproductive, so we will be working on simple steps anyone can take to reduce the toxic load in their lives starting today.

Step 6

Test Don't Stress 

 If you feel like you have tried everything when it comes to healing the gut, then this module will hopefully start to shed some light on new solutions for you. We will be discussing the different tests and genetic markers that can help guide the gut healing journey, taking much of the guesswork out of hard-to-beat gut issues and finding a clearer path forward. While not everyone has to get testing done to heal their gut, many find tests to be a helpful tool, especially those who are hitting a wall in their progress toward better health.

Step 7

Herbal Allies for Gut Healing 

While a nourishing diet and low stress lifestyle are the foundation of a healthy gut, there are times where herbs can be supportive in the healing journey. This module will dig into the main categories of herbs that help support digestive health: bitters, nervines and adaptogens, mucilages, antimicrobials and anti-inflammatories. We will also discuss the role of other supplements in a gut healing protocol, and hope to bust the myth that these protocols needs to include a boat load of supplements!
